Vidos island, Greece. It is a small island (less than kilometre in diameter) at the mouth of Corfu city port. The small, wooded isle of Vidos lies just half a mile from Corfu Town's Old Port. Vidos has lived through much history. Under Venetian rule, criminals transported to the island , which was once Corfu's 'Alcatraz'. The isolated remains of the prison can still be found today, The Island was used even few years ago like penitentiary. Vidos Island had always been a strategic point in Corfu's defences and following the departure of the Venetians, Vidos was fortified under French governance. The last foreign power in Corfu was the British, who turned Vidos into an almost impenetrable fortress, before destroying their own and all the previous fortifications on their departure. During the First World War, the Corfu Island served as an island hospital and quarantine for the sick Serbian soldiers following the epic retreat of the Serbian army and part of the civilian population through Montenegro and Albania in 1915 following the Austro-German-Bulgarian invasion of Serbia. A lot of solders get sick and more than 5000 people were buried at sea near the island of Vido. A monument (mausoleum) is erected at Vido by the Serbs for the victims.
Now the Island it’s a nice place to visit, you can found a traditional restaurant, a boy scout camp and a lot of place for swimming.
