A metaphor…

In Greek mythology, Lamia was a Queen of Libya, daughter of Poseidon.
Zeus loved her but Hera discovered the affair and robbed her children from this union. Lamia in her deep grief became a demon.
Flavius Philostratus’s Life of Apollonius of Tyana described her as a fiend who, in the form of a beautiful woman, seduced young men in order to devour them. (vampire, host?).
John Keats’s Lamia (1819) was inspired by reading Philostratus’s story in Robert Burton’s Anatomy of Melancholy (1621).
